Process of Making Stoneware Ceramics

Each piece is made with care and attention to detail, and the process takes time to ensure the highest quality.

1. Wedging the Clay

To prepare, the clay is kneaded (a process called wedging) to smooth it out and remove any air bubbles.

2. Throwing

Each piece is carefully shaped by hand on the potter’s wheel. This is where the design comes to life.

3. Trimming

Once the piece has dried to a leather-hard stage, excess clay is trimmed away to refine the shape and add foot rings or other details.

4. Drying

After trimming, the piece is left to dry completely, a slow process that helps prevent cracks during firing.

5. Bisque Firing

The dried piece undergoes its first firing in the kiln at 950°C. This step hardens the clay and prepares it for glazing.

6. Glazing

Glaze is applied by hand, which adds colour and a smooth finish.

7. Glaze Firing

The piece is fired again at a higher temperature (1230°C), transforming the clay into durable stoneware and giving the glaze its final appearance.

8. Sanding

After the bisque firing, the surface is sanded to smooth out any rough spots.

9. Finishing

Each piece is checked and polished to ensure it’s just right.

Eren Armitage
The Producer

We’ve collaborated with stoneware ceramicist Eren Armitage to celebrate our shared appreciation of exceptional serveware for exceptional coffee.

Born in Yokohama, Japan and now residing in Harrogate, UK, Eren’s pieces celebrate her Japanese heritage and the surrounding nature of the Yorkshire Dales she now calls home.

The collection encourages you to take a moment, to slow down, to appreciate life’s quieter moments.

Mindfully created to introduce textures contrasting yet complementary, each piece in the collection is designed to enhance the sensory experience of every moment during brewing.

We can’t imagine a better way to enjoy our coffee.
